A member of the Simple Savings website that I am a member of has just confirmed with Cadbury that the vegetable fat they have just started adding to their chocolate is :

"5% vege fat - combo of palm oil and 'exotic' fats - shea, mango, sal and illipe"

Shea, Sal and Illipe are all considered tree nuts (albeit exotic ones we don't normally come across here) mf_hide

There is no change in the allergen statement on the bar m_ad (I have not noticed any change) and as far as I am concerned this is now a product which has nuts as an ingredient not just a "may contain traces of" product.

We don't give DD cadbury anyway as we consider the risk with traces to be too high, but I have heard of some nut allergic people eating the plain dairy milk chocolate due to the manufacturing process with the plain choc making the risk low (ie large batch made on clean equipment before flavoured ones made). I wonder if these people realise the risk has changed.

banghead This isn't a problem for us as the kids can't eat dairy but I have a friend whose son is allergic to nuts so this will be an issue for them. I cannot believe a massive company such as Cadbury are taking such chances without any statements on their packs. I know businesses are doing it tough at the moment and this is probably a cost cutting exercise but they are putting peoples lives at risk m_ad

Wow! Thanks for the warning. I allow Nicholas to have 'may contain' products and although infrequent, he has had cadbury's chocolate m_ad m_ad m_ad m_ad

mf_hide cr:y DS can't have Cadbury (or most choc for that matter) due to dairy but I close my eyes over the nut warning bit and risk eating it for myself. Now I'm not sure if I'll be so willing to risk it but I sooo sm_heart Cadbury choc (Nestle is blah) but I am really not sure that I will be gain to try and see if these ones are a prob for me or not. They might have just done my waistline a favour but I'm so not a sane person without choc. banghead m_ad Think I might have to ring and m_ad at them a bit. Thanks for the heads up about it.

Re Cadbury - my girls eat it regularly and B1 is baaaadly allergic to nuts... :crazy I'm sure she's ok with mango [has had orange/mango drink] and I've purchased soap before containing 'shea' and she's had no problem. Unsure about the sal & illipe... saywha

I have different food allergy and chocolate allergy was the one of them. But then, sometimes I try eating chocolates and I think that’s not to serious compare with my other allergies.

Hi danneva sm_wave

That's interesting... I thought the comment at the end was funny:
Quote:
But since chocolate is predominantly a treat and not a necessary food source, giving it up will not harm your diet. In fact, it might help you lose a few pounds along the way as well.
However, there are alot of ingredients in chocolate, so I would think it was only perhaps one of them, and not chocolate itself? sm_blush
